THe Asian Equation was created in 1996, when Dj Ritu got a call to do a live show and produce 5 concerts in the Heimatklange Festival in the
Tempodrome in Berlin. What was supposed to be a small project, has become an internacional success, with calls for concerts in many
countries. This unique project has inspired many other artists to pursue the same
direction.
The Asian Equation is an evolving group of musicians, dancers, rappers and a D.J., who work together to create a musical landscape that
incorporates the sounds of the new Asian Underground
scene. Every concert is directed by Dj Ritu, well known Disc-jockey in London clubs like
VodooOdoo, Global Sweatbox, Sitarfunk, and his own club - Kali, which he runs while producing and hosting the program UK
Asian, on the
BBC.
DJ Ritu´s disc collection is one of the biggest in the U.K. Oriental dance music from the
50´s, house, drum&bass, soul, swing, disco, Arabic music, Hindu, Latin, etc. His main focus is Asian music made in the
U.K., Bhangra, Hindi, Gharbar, Ghazal and New Asian Fusion, which allows him to
reach Asian audiences as well as western ones.
The rest of the musicians work with Dj , and add diverse styles like : drum n
bass, techno, house, trip-hop and jazz , all with an Asian flavor into
the mix. The Asian Equation is an English/Asian Voyage.
“...ecclectisism is the basis of my mixes, I don´t like to play for audiences that want to hear one type of music or the same tempo all night. At the
same time, when I go to see groups play, it doesn´t matter how good they are, after an hour I usually have the sensation of a limited experience
to be listening to the same band all the time. With The Asian Equation, we can have a little of every
band, I can take from Transglobal Uderground, Nusrath Fateh Ali Khan, Roni
Size, Talvin Singh, etc, and together with the musicians and the rapper, create a three hour concert
that mantains energy and variety...”
